Dean, College of Arts and Sciences

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Dean provides dynamic leadership and strategic direction for the College of Arts and Sciences and functions as its chief academic officer. This position reports directly to the Provost and is responsible for maintaining and strengthening the quality of academic programs and faculty and staff, and working with other deans and university constituencies to help fulfill the university's educational mission. The Dean must be a strong and effective leader and manager of the human, financial, and physical resources of the College. The Dean has oversight of the School of Education and the Departments of English and Humanities, Mathematical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Fine, Digital, and Performing Arts, the General Education Program, the Clark Planetarium, and the Center for Public History.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
FUNCTIONS:

  1. Advance goals and objectives of the College.
  2. Lead academic program and enrollment initiatives for the College.
  3. Manage and develop personnel associated with the College.
  4. Ensure appropriate stewardship of the College's financial resources.
  5. Engage in development and advancement activities in support of the College.
  6. Engage in external relations as appropriate to the College's activities.
  7. Other duties as assigned.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Advance goals and objectives of the College
  • Develop and implement goals and objectives of the college to provide cutting-edge educational services utilizing appropriate human and physical resources in accordance with the university's mission.
  • Plan, organize, and direct academic programs in accordance with the university's mission, strategic plan, and goals and policies to achieve optimal student learning and program cost effectiveness.
    2. Lead academic program and enrollment initiatives for the College
  • Lead development and planning for new in-demand academic programs and establish enrollment goals and metrics to motivate and enhance growth in the college.
  • Assure continuous curriculum improvement and innovation by evaluating program effectiveness in conjunction with advisory groups and other internal and external sources. Propose changes in policy or curriculum to the Provost for consideration.
  • Oversee scheduling of courses in consultation with department chairs/school directors and other appropriate personnel to provide optimal and cost-effective educational services at the university, college, and department levels.
  • Provide leadership of the College Recruiting Committee.
  • Assure compliance with existing programmatic accreditations within the College and pursue new program accreditations as appropriate.
    3. Manage and develop personnel associated with the College
  • Manage and effectively implement the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  • Work with faculty committees to recruit, interview, and recommend new faculty for hire.
  • Evaluate the performance of staff and department chairs/program directors, and if necessary, recommend corrective action when needed. Confer with chairs/directors regarding personnel actions as needed.
  • Encourage and support the ongoing professional development of faculty and staff to better meet the needs of students and achieve improvement in programs.
  • Manage the tenure and promotion system in coordination with the Provost. Recommend candidates for promotion and tenure to the Provost.
    4. Ensure appropriate stewardship of the College's financial resources
  • Recommend College budget to the Provost designed to provide optimal services in a cost-effective manner.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility with ability to manage College's finances within the allocated budget.
    5. Engage in development and advancement activities in support of the College
  • Major Gift cultivation and stewardship: Coordinate with development to identify prospects, cultivate giving opportunities, and recognize donors for major gifts to the college.
  • Annual Fund support: Provide college resources to support programs that raise funds for The Shawnee Fund and The Friends of Shawnee State Scholarship.
  • Advisory Board(s): Serve as chair of the college advisory board (and other program or special initiative boards as may be developed), coordinating with development for prospect development, meetings and agendas, and advisory board member engagement.
  • Grants: Coordinate with the grants team to identify opportunities, prioritize and prepare applications, and implement awards for public and private grant funding to the college and specific program and faculty initiatives.
  • Alumni engagement: Work with academic programs and departments to identify alumni news, messaging, and event opportunities; refer to development for deployment.
    6. Engage in external relations as appropriate to the College's activities
  • Serve as the "face of the college" with a variety of university, higher education institutions, and community stakeholders and establish and maintain collegial and productive relationships with such stakeholders.
  • Respond to requests for information as required by Ohio State law, the Ohio Department of Higher Education, and accrediting agencies.
  • Develop and manage college program-specific academic advising, personal skills programming, and career development facilities, including programs for high functioning employer relations, workforce development partnerships, and alumni job pipelines. The Dean will be evaluated on the number and quality of student work experiences, including internships, co-ops, and clinicals that programs
    coordinate and deliver for students.

    Minimum Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    MINIMUM JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    1. Proven leadership, supervision, and budget management skills.
    2. Ability to analyze complex issues, manage multiple priorities, problem-solve and respond proactively in addressing academic issues using a collaborative approach.
    3. An understanding of the principles of shared governance.
    4. A knowledge of best practices as it relates to the development and administration of in-demand undergraduate and graduate programs, student support services, student retention and completion programs, faculty professional development, and faculty labor relations.
    5. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with faculty, students, and staff in resolving sensitive issues and to lead faculty and staff effectively.
    6. Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.
    7. A tolerance for ambiguity.


    Minimum Qualifications
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

    1. Earned doctorate in discipline relevant to the College of Arts and Sciences and a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with tenured academic rank at the
      level of professor at the time of appointment.
    2. 4-5 years of experience in an academic leadership position at the level of department chair, school director, program director, etc. or above with a successful record in prior positions.
    3. Progressive professional growth with skills and experiences germane for this position.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    1. Experience in working with collective bargaining agreements.
    2. Public speaking and writing skills that result in clear communication and concise reports.
    3. Record of working collegially with faculty and staff.
    4. Knowledge of the Appalachian culture and ability to work with students, including first-generation, non-traditional, and commuting populations.
